Even though Howland Varsity gave up three runs in the first inning, they still defeated John F. Kennedy Catholic 12-4 on Wednesday.
Howland knotted the game up at three in the bottom of the third inning. Jared Mindek grounded out, scoring one run.
The Tigers pulled away for good with four runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Robert Gumino singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run, Anthony Massucci singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run, and Mindek’s sac fly scored one run for Howland Varsity.
The Tigers scored five runs in the fifth inning. The big inning was thanks to sacrifice flies by Gumino and Mindek, a single by Joshua McCleery, and a double by Massucci.
Braden Gebhardt was the winning pitcher for Howland Varsity. The ace went six and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out 11. McCleery threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Howland Varsity tallied 13 hits. Anthony Massucci, Marco Massucci, and McCleery all managed multiple hits for Howland Varsity. Massucci went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Howland Varsity in hits, and Marco Massucci was also perfect at the plate going 3-for-3.
