Tigers News · SPEECH and DEBATE CONTINUES TO SHINE

By now you have probably seen students talking to themselves in the halls or maybe even talking to a wall.  Don’t worry, it’s the speech and debate students who are hard at work preparing for their next tournament.  This past weekend the students of Howland faced a tough task and held their own at the Columbiana tournament.  Placing for the Tigers were; Jemima Nwagbara 2nd, Nathan Hudson and  Ethan Deemer 5th, Alek Mahramas 6th, and Niko Mastorides 6th in their respective categories. Proving that hard work pays off,  Kate Li has advanced in Congressional Debate in every tournament so far.  Good Luck Speech and Debate students and keep up the hard work.

Coed Varsity Newspaper · Howland Student Receives National Recognition

Jessica Spore is a senior member of the Howland High School Band.  She is First Chair Clarinet of the Symphonic Band and Drum Major of the Marching band..  Jessica is a clarinet player of a caliber far beyond most High School music students.  Under the instruction of her private teacher Nancy Moore; Jessica has obtained, principal chair of the Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Stambaugh Youth Concert Band, The Ohio University Honor Clarinet Choir,  The YSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble Side By Side Honor Band, the OMEA District 5 Honor Band, OMEA Northeast Regional Orchestra (NERO), last year member of the OMEA All-State Orchestra, and this year member of the OMEA All-State Band.
These are all amazing accomplishments but this year she has gone one level further.  Students who made their all state bands throughout the country had the opportunity to audition for the All National Honor Ensemble (ANHE) which is an elite band made up of the finest High School musicians in the country.  It is sponsored by NAFME the National Music Education Society which the OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) is a part of.  This is truly one of the finest honor bands in the United States.  I am very proud to say Jessica auditioned and made First Chair Clarinet in this group.  They will be performing in Orlando, Florida at the Walt Disney World Resort in November.
Here is a link to the event…

Coed Varsity Newspaper · PAWS WITH A CAUSE GETS NEW LEASE ON LIFE

The student members of Paws with a Cause (PWAC) volunteered their time at “New Lease On Life” on Thursday October 19th in Struthers.  Students spent time helping clean up and taking care of animals.  Students assisted in clearing out cages, feeding and watering the animals and taking them for walks around the block.  These students log hours assisting local animal charities and helping with maintaining clean and safe animal environments.  If you are interesting in being a part of PWAC, contact Miss Turney or see a club member for more details.
